Jeep WK Rear Drive Shaft

The 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee came with a poorly designed stock rear drive shaft. The large diameter aluminum shaft is vulnerable to rock damage. The plastic boot is easy to tear. Worst of all, the non-greaseable universal joints are not replaceable, someone had the great idea to permanently stake them into the shaft. The only way to replace the joint is to replace the entire shaft. Ours is different, ours is made from steel. The Tom Wood's WK rear drive shaft comes with joints that are not only greaseable but are also replaceable. This shaft will also fit an XK Commander.

Key product features

  • 2.5" diameter 0.083" wall USA made DOM steel tube.
  • Forged slip yoke.
  • Your choice between Tom Wood's exclusive Gold Seal greaseable universal joints or non-greaseable joints. Both joints are replaceable and held in place with retaining clips.
  • Best of all every shaft is custom built to whatever length you need. So you can be sure that you will get the right thing the first time around.

Jeep WK rear drive shaft lengths vary a bit and we want to make sure you get the right thing. That is why we require a length measurement before building the shaft. Measuring is simple and easy. Just measure the length of the stock shaft as shown in the photo above. It is important that you measure this with the stock shaft still installed in the jeep.

If your Jeep is lifted more than 2 or 3 inches, you may need a double cardan style rear shaft. For more details about the double cardan shaft, give us a call

An extremely important upgrade

I did a simple strut lift (of about 3in) by upgrading my WK to Bilstein 5100's. An unfortunate side effect of this upgrade is that it lengthened the distance between the transfer case and the rear diff flanges by one inch. Unfortunately I did not notice at the time, and after about a year the pressure of having a rear driveshaft that was one inch too short shredded the pinion seal on my rear diff, which fried both of the pinion bearings before even a warning light appeared. And so I had to rebuild the rear end.

To prevent this from happening again, I bought this custom driveshaft from Tom Woods in the needed length I measured. It fits perfectly and is an upgrade from the factory rear driveshaft in many other ways (because the factory driveshafts on WKs are aluminum Mercedes crap).

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to get the Woods driveshaft at the time I did the lift. Would have prevented me from having to rebuild a Chrysler 8.25 with ESLD.

Perfect fit and serviceable. 15 minutes to replace

The drive shaft is the money grab from manufacturers I was unaware of, mine was on the way out and I looked high and low for a joint untill I realized it's pinned from factory. Luckly I was at work and sow a lifted version of my jeep with this sticker on the window. And now I'm a proud owner of this great, well made drive shaft. And it being half price is a huge part. Thank you Tom woods for your services.

Great shaft

My son rebuilt the transfer case on our Jeep Commander but it was still making some noise. When he took it off one of the joints was stuck. The new shaft works great.
Thanks

Great replacement

Driveshaft from Jeep dealer $1600cad (and backordered and non repairable...). This was around $750cad to my door and fit perfectly. The guys were incredibly responsive with questions to make this a hassle free purchase.
