XJ Rear Drive Shaft, Double Cardan
Rear drive shaft for Jeep XJ Cherokee. Double cardan type, also known as a CV. This is what you need if your Jeep is lifted and you are experiencing vibrations or other problems due to increased angles. Shaft will require a slip yoke eliminator.
Tom Wood's XJ drive shafts are built using only the highest quality components. Key features listed below.
- 2" diameter .120" wall USA made DOM tube.
- Forged slip yoke.
- Greaseable CV center ball.
- Your choice between Tom Wood's exclusive Gold Seal greaseable universal joints or non-greaseable joints.
- Your choice of spline and slip yoke options, more about that here.
- Comes with new CV bolts with reduced head for ease of installation.
- Best of all every shaft is custom built to whatever length you need. So you can be sure that you will get the right thing the first time around. Jeep XJ rear drive shaft lengths vary a bit and we want to make sure you get the right thing. That is why we require a length measurement before building the shaft. Measuring is simple and easy. You can read more about how to measure in the link below.
IMPORTANT You must also measure the joint size where the shaft attaches to the rear axle. There are two possible joint sizes. Select the size that fits your yoke.
We recommend a new set of straps and bolts to securely attach your new drive shaft.
Ordered with a SYE for 01’ XJ. Both great products. I put new ujoints in my front driveshaft….. wish I’d just ordered a driveshaft for it as well.
I ordered a Tom Woods driveshaft and installed it. Just note that if you are ordering a driveshaft from Tom Woods, you can buy it ahead of time by measuring your current configuration without an SYE and subtract three inches. Read the website carefully! I ordered it incorrectly by not subtracting three inches but caught the error about half an hour after I ordered. I called them immediately and they were very helpful at correcting my order. Great customer service! For reference, I used an advance adapters SYE kit in a late model NP231. In a ‘98XJ 4 door with an AX15, I needed an 34-3/4” driveshaft.
After installing the SYE transfer case and new drive shaft, I still noticed a driveline rumble. I knew this might be a possibility as I had watched the Tom Woods driveline video on YouTube. With the double cardan driveshaft, the rear pinion angle must be adjusted. I measured my driveshaft and rear axle angles and chose a six degree wedge. The wedges left me with 1.8 degree difference to allow for wind up.
Night and day difference! The wedges cured the driveline rumble issues.
I couldn’t be happier with the driveshaft I received - it was exactly what I needed and it showed up very fast!
I had heard that they were quick but I’ve seen it now for myself. Ordered it and three days later it’s sitting there on my porch ready to get abused by rocks. The Amazon of Driveshafts!
Shawn answered all my questions prior to ordering and I was absolutely shocked by the shipping speed. Also, these drive shafts are HEAVY duty. Compared to the flimsy stock shafts, these feel like they're ready for war. They're solid and I trust it to hold up to anything I put it through. Thanks!
I purchased my first XJ a couple months back and have spent the last couple of months working on getting it to a place of "amazing'ness'es". I have been losing my ever living mind trying to fix and locate the noises and vibrations these things have. Had thought it was U joints, wheel bearings and even transfer case chain rubbing - nope. When I got some vibrations at 25mph after a shackle install, the lightbulb came on! Talked to Customer Service who was very helpful and placed my order for a SYE and Rear Driveshaft. Was in my hands a couple of days later and let me just say that every damn vibration and noise I had is GONE! I cannot believe how much this has changed the handling and drivability of my XJ. Could not be happier. Thanks to the nice humans who answered all my questions.
